Student Government Association (SGA)
The Student Government Association is a student-led organization at SUNY Canton that provides a means of cooperation and unity among the students, faculty, and administration at SUNY Canton.
Student government is a form of student leadership and participatory democracy that gives students a voice in their educational experience. Student government is an essential aspect of education that provides students a platform to express their opinions and ideas and participate in their college community’s decision-making process. Overall, student government plays a vital role in promoting student involvement and empowerment in their education and is a valuable part of the college experience for many students.
All SGA programming and events are paid for with student Activity Fee funds.

Who is the Student Government Association (SGA)?
The SUNY Canton Student Government Association (SGA) is comprised of six student leaders who make up the SGA Executive Board and have a responsibility to provide for the general welfare of the student body. The executive board members must be part-time or full-time SUNY Canton students and are elected each academic year by the student body.
The executive board is made up of the following roles:
- President
- Vice President
- Budget Director
- Secretary
- Online Student Representative
- College Activities Board President

How can I become an SGA Leader?
Any student at SUNY Canton is eligible to run for election to the SGA so long as they meet the eligibility requirements:
- Must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.50
- Must be in good standing with Student Conduct
- Must be able to fulfill the officer duties and responsibilities outlined in the SGA constitution
SGA officers are elected by the student body each academic year. Elections are held every Spring semester.
What does SGA do?
SGA represents the student body's interests, concerns, and needs by implementing innovative programs, services, and initiatives that enrich student experiences at SUNY Canton. They meet regularly with students, advisors, administrators, clubs & organizations, and key stakeholders to be successful in this. They also host programs such as Carnival of Clubs and SGA Leadership Conferences for students to engage, network, and develop their leadership skills.
What if I don't want to join SGA, but want to join a club/organization?
If you'd like to be actively involved with campus life, join one of the many active, recognized student organizations. Attending programs, activities, and meetings is the best way to get involved. View RooLife for upcoming events and a list of the active clubs & organizations.
What is the Student Activity Fee?
The Student Activity Fee supports a wide range of activities that take place on campus for educational and entertainment purposes.
The Activity Fee is a mandatory fee imposed by the students for the students. This fee was most recently passed with a 71.3% approval of the students. It is used to support student government activities. This fee funds all student clubs, organizations, and campus events. Payment of the fee enables a student to join any of the organizations or attend any of the events sponsored by the student government.
