Training Opportunities

SUNY Canton EMS offers a variety of trainings for its members as well as trainings open to the campus community. Some of the regular trainings are below, however if there is a specific training that you are looking for and want to know if we offer it, email ems@Canton.edu with your request.

NY STATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)

The New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program is a comprehensive course designed to equip individuals with the skills needed for pre-hospital emergency medical care. Typically encompassing 150 to 200 hours of instruction, the program covers crucial areas such as patient assessment, airway management, CPR, trauma care, and medical emergencies. This training is required for those aspiring to become EMTs, enabling them to respond efficiently to emergencies and provide essential care until patients reach medical facilities.

Although SUNY Canton EMS does not offer these classes directly, we sponsor our members in good standing to take the course. Students or community members not affiliated with SUNY Canton EMS can enroll in EMT courses at Clarkson University. CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)

The CPR class offered through SUNY Canton EMS provides vital training in life-saving techniques. We offer courses certified by either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, ensuring the highest standards of instruction. These courses cover essential skills such as performing chest compressions, rescue breathing, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Designed for both healthcare professionals and the general public, the training empowers individuals to act swiftly and effectively in emergency situations.

Time and Cost:
CPR Classes are 4 hours long and cost $35.

Spring 2024 Courses: All courses have ended. Check back the end of August for Fall 2024 Class times.

RED CROSS FIRST AID

The Red Cross First Aid course is a comprehensive training program designed to equip individuals with the essential skills and knowledge needed to respond to a variety of medical emergencies. This course covers a wide range of topics, including how to recognize and provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses, manage choking incidents, and deal with broken bones. Participants learn through a combination of hands-on practice and interactive instruction, ensuring they are well-prepared to act confidently in emergency situations. The program emphasizes the importance of quick and effective response to prevent further injury and save lives. Suitable for individuals, families, workplaces, and community groups, the Red Cross First Aid course aims to empower people with the ability to provide immediate and appropriate care, enhancing the safety and resilience of their communities.

Time and Cost:
First Aid courses are 4 hours long, and cost $50.

OPIOID OVERDOSE PREVENTION

The Opioid Overdose Prevention program is an educational initiative designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to opioid overdose emergencies. This program provides comprehensive training on recognizing the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, understanding the risks associated with opioid use, and learning the steps to take in an emergency situation. Participants are taught how to administer naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, and how to perform basic first aid measures until professional medical help arrives. The program also covers important information on local and national resources available for addiction support and recovery. Suitable for a wide range of audiences, including community members, healthcare professionals, educators, and first responders, the Opioid Overdose Prevention program aims to empower individuals to act swiftly and effectively, potentially saving lives and reducing the impact of the opioid crisis in their communities. All participants receive naloxone (Narcan) for free at the completion of the course.

Time and Cost:
Opioid Overdose Prevention courses are about 30 minutes long, and are free.

STOP THE BLEED®

The "Stop the Bleed" program is a national initiative aimed at teaching the public how to respond in emergency situations involving severe bleeding. Developed by the American College of Surgeons and other organizations, this program provides participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to control life-threatening bleeding until professional help arrives. Through hands-on training and instructional sessions, individuals learn how to identify severe bleeding, apply pressure, use tourniquets, and pack wounds effectively. The program emphasizes the importance of quick action, as uncontrolled bleeding is a leading cause of preventable death in traumatic situations. Suitable for a wide range of audiences, including schools, workplaces, community groups, and first responders, "Stop the Bleed" empowers everyday people to become immediate responders and potentially save lives in critical moments.

Time and Cost:
Stop the Bleed courses are an hour long and are free.

TALK SAVES LIVES

The "Talk Saves Lives" program, developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), is a community-based presentation designed to provide essential knowledge about suicide prevention. This program aims to raise awareness and educate the public about suicide, equipping them with the necessary information to help prevent it. Participants gain an understanding of the general scope of suicide, including its impact on communities, and learn about risk factors and warning signs that someone might be at risk. The presentation offers practical prevention strategies, including how to have conversations with those who might be at risk, how to connect them to appropriate resources, and how to create a supportive environment.

Time and Cost:
The Talk Saves Lives courses are an hour long and are free.
