Welcome to the Campus Pride Month 2025 special issue of GrasseRoots, SUNY Canton’s literary magazine. This special issue was made possible by funding from a Campus Enhancement Grant generously awarded by the Canton College Foundation to SPECTRUM, SUNY Canton’s LGBTQ+ student club. Over the past year, SPECTRUM has collected and curated submissions to create the labor of love we now present to you in this special issue: a collection of short stories, creative nonfiction essays, poetry, and digital artwork that reflects the individuality and character of the students, staff, faculty, and alumni who made them. As we share this special edition during Campus Pride Month, we are also reminded of the many places and spaces where queer voices remain silenced or ostracized. We want to thank all those who have helped make these voices heard, especially the Canton College Foundation; Grasseroots’ student intern, Richard Haller; Greg Kie, Travis Smith, and Matt Mulkin in the SUNY Canton Office of Public Relations; SPECTRUM club members Basil Philips, Max Sprouse, and Crowley Nelson; the team of SPECTRUM co-advisors: Melissa Lee, Christina Leshko, Kara McLuckie, Joe Malek, and Jackie Ryan; and all of the contributors to this special issue.
