The Moon

By Alexandria Kirkwood Enosh

I think I’m in love with the moon.

Cold. Distant. Inviting.

The way it slowly gives itself over
to the darkness
until it is completely overcome by shadow.
Content to be wrapped into
a starry embrace.

Turning and turning,
shrinking and contorting
until it is nothingness.

And then, slowly . . . sensually,
it winks back into existence,
a sliver of silver blood
peeking from behind the curtain.

Slowly, confidently proclaiming
its arrival
until it is swollen with light.
The Empress. The Goddess.
The brightest fucking thing in the sky.

It craves the darkness but does not need it.
It whispers to the many stars,
but does not need them to reply.
