Description of Duties

Under the direction of Dining Management, the Senior Dining Operations Supervisor provides leadership and oversight for daily dining operations, including food production and responsibility for ware washing, storage, inventory management, and customer service. This position is responsible for ensuring efficient operations, maintaining quality and safety standards, supervising dining personnel, and supporting the achievement of departmental goals. The Senior Dining Operations Supervisor serves as a lead operational resource for dining facilities and assists management with staff development, scheduling, and cost control.

Principal Duties

  1. Oversee the daily operations of dining facilities, including food production, ware washing, storage, inventory management, and portion control.
  2. Supervises dining service employees, including cooks, bakers, production and line cooks, dishwashers, dining workers, and student employees.
  3. Assists with employee and student scheduling to ensure coverage.
  4. Ensures compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health, and workplace safety regulations and procedures.
  5. Monitors food preparation, presentation, and service to ensure quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction.
  6. Assists with inventory management, ordering, receiving, and maintaining appropriate stock levels while minimizing waste.
  7. Supports food cost control initiatives, menu pricing, and operational efficiencies within established budgetary guidelines.
  8. Coordinates and implements special events, promotions, catering functions, and campus activities in collaboration with management.
  9. Monitors and evaluates operational performance, recommending process improvements to enhance efficiency, productivity, and customer service.
  10. Assists management with implementing departmental policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives.
  11. Serves as the acting operational lead during designated shifts and in the absence of dining management as assigned.

Lesser Duties

  1. Serves on committees and work groups as assigned.
  2. Recommends changes to operational procedures, workflows, and production practices to improve service and efficiency.
  3. Assists with departmental projects and initiatives as needed.
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position provides direct supervision of dining associates and student employees and assists management with employee training, performance management, scheduling, and operational oversight. The Senior Dining Operations Supervisor serves as a lead resource for daily dining operations and may assume responsibility for shift operations in the absence of management.

Work Environment

This position regularly works in commercial food service environments and is frequently exposed to smoke, steam, heat, kitchen equipment, and cleaning chemicals. Frequent contact with water, sanitation solutions, meat products, poultry products, seafood, dairy products, and produce items is required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, communicate, and hear. The employee frequently reaches, bends, stoops, stirs, pours, carries, pushes, and lifts objects weighing up to 75 pounds. The position requires substantial repetitive use of hands, wrists, and fingers and the ability to work extended periods in a fast-paced environment.

Required Education

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Minimum of five years of food service experience, preferably in a college, university, or institutional dining environment.
  3. Minimum of three years of progressively responsible supervisory experience.
  4. Valid New York State driver's license with the ability to drive and maintain LENS approval.
  5. ServSafe Certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  6. Experience with food safety regulations, inventory management, scheduling, and staff supervision.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Associate's degree in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  2. Experience overseeing multiple dining service areas or operational units.
  3. Experience with food cost analysis, and menu pricing.
  4. Experience in a higher education dining environment.

Position Type and Expected Schedule

This position requires flexibility to work evening and night shifts, including weekends. The specific schedule will be established upon hire and may vary based on departmental needs.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time ten-month position based on the academic year.
