Description of Duties
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at the State University of New York at Canton is seeking candidates for a counselor position. The EOP Counselor provides academic and personal support programs for historically disadvantaged students who have diverse talents, strengths, experiences, and needs. This is a full-time, 12-month position in a department that includes the director, administrative assistant, and three full-time counselors who work within the broader academic support services area as a team fostering student success.
Responsibilities
- Providing individual and group counseling as well as programming in the areas of personal, academic and career development for EOP students.
- Advisement services (course registration, student record reviews, academic planning, etc.) are an integral component of the position.
- The counselor will be expected to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of individual and group counseling sessions.
- The successful candidate will also serve as a liaison and advocate for program students with campus and community offices and assist in short and long term planning and assessment activities.
- A significant component of the position includes managing student success through proactive academic advisement. This could also include teaching freshmen college success classes to EOP students.
- The counselor will help shape the on-boarding process for transfer students and play an active role in the pre-first year summer bridge program as well.
Qualifications
Required:
- Masters degree in counseling or a closely related field is required.
- A valid driver’s license, willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends is required.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a college or university setting, knowledge of college student development, experience in academic advising and/or counseling, academic intervention programs, working with diverse populations, excellent oral and written communication skills is preferred.
- It would be helpful if the candidate is familiar with college financial aid processes, Banner or a closely related data management system, and general knowledge of EOP or college-level TRIO programs.
Prior to a final offer of employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, educational and other credential verification, and criminal background check.
