SUNY Canton Earns Highest-Ever Rankings from U.S. News & World Report
SUNY Canton continues to make strides in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings.
The college jumped up seven spots from last year, landing in 12th place on the “Regional Colleges – North” list. The category encompasses public and private institutions in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Delaware, Rhode Island and Maryland that focus on undergraduate education, but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal arts disciplines.
The College also moved up one spot to 11th on the “Best Value Regional Colleges – North” list, which, according to the publication, combines the college’s academic quality with the net cost of attendance.
When measured against its public peer institutions, SUNY Canton advanced two spots to crack the top 10 to earn ninth place overall on the “Best Public Regional Colleges – North” list.
“Collectively, these are the highest rankings the College has ever earned from U.S. News & World Report,” said President Zvi Szafran. “We are seeing the results of the hard work our faculty and staff have put in for years to maintain a high level of academic quality, as well as to develop robust services for both face-to-face and online students, such as advising, tutoring, career assistance, health and wellness, and library resources.”
SUNY Canton, well known for its military-friendly culture, also climbed four spots on the “Best Regional Colleges for Veterans – North” list to sixth place.
U.S. News debuted a new ranking in 2019 for social mobility, and the College has steadily risen in that category as well, moving up four spots to 15th on the regional list. The magazine said top performers in social mobility are measured by how well they enrolled and graduated Pell grant recipients, who typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually.
“We are building on our mission of access by providing even more affordable pathways to degrees for students in all stages of life, particularly now as the pandemic has put a financial strain on many New Yorkers,” Szafran added.
SUNY Canton was also noted on the “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs” list. Last year, the college received a generous gift in honor of the late Nursing Professor Emerita Mary Ann Caswell to purchase state-of-the-art technology for the program’s simulation-hospital classroom.
In addition to the U.S. News results, several academic programs have recently earned high marks for affordability and quality from other college ranking organizations. Many were selected for their strength in online delivery, such as Agribusiness and Finance. The college currently has 23 fully online degrees.
