Bronson Sharrow

Bronson Sharrow is majoring in Information Technology in preparation for a future career at his home on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reservation.
“I graduate in spring 2027,” Bronson said. “I plan on working for my local tribal government or management group to work in their IT positions.”
Bronson started in the Electrical Engineering Technology program and then switched to his current major. “I've always been really good with computers and computer hardware, so I thought it would be a good career path to pursue,” he said. “I found IT to be more in line with my vision for what I wanted for a career.”
He said his current favorite class is CITA 175, taught by Security Systems Administrator Joe Leroux, and he also enjoys creative classes offered by Lecturer Seth Nixon in the college’s Graphic and Multimedia Design program.
Outside of classes, Bronson enjoys going on trips with his friends. He said they’ve been some of the most memorable experiences of being a student at SUNY Canton.
Bronson is also a member of the new Native American Student Alliance. ‘We are working hard together to create a space where Native students can be comfortable,” he said.
Following SUNY Canton’s ongoing Mohawk Names project, we asked Bronson about his native name, Aronhiateka (phonetically pronounced uh-loon-yuh-deck-ah). “It means fire in the sky,” he said.
Bronson is one of more than 50 Indigenous (Native American or Native Alaskan) students at SUNY Canton enrolled during Fall 2024. College administrators recognize that the college is located on the ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee and thank the traditional caretakers of the land where students now work, study, play, and learn.
