Tashmir Eggleston

In just a few short months, first-year student Tashmir (Taz) Eggleston of Newburgh is developing a solid connection with the community of Canton.

Taz is a new member of SUNY Canton’s student EMS Squad who recently helped with the club’s participation in the Trunk-or-Treat. “I’m grateful to be a part of the event,” he said. “I'm big on having a strong connection to my community, wherever I am.”

The homeland security major said, “I wasn’t much of a sports guy growing up, but I was into law enforcement. I entered my local BOCES during my junior year of high school and earned six certificates, four security clinical sites, went on ride-a-longs with local police, and earned a supervisor rank of crossing guard sergeant.”

Taz selected SUNY Canton because it was one of the only colleges with a Homeland Security major and in-person classes. “My favorite class is Intro to Criminal Justice,” he said. “My favorite faculty member is Mr. Andrew Wood for his unique teaching style. He ensures every student can understand the topics.”

He plans on earning his EMT certification and staying active with the student squad on campus. He graduates in 2028 and is planning on attending University at Albany for his master’s degree. Taz said his dream job would be joining the Homeland Security Investigations Unit. “I’d like to diminish the effect of major crime organizations in hopes that it will have a positive effect on towns like mine throughout the U.S.,” he said.
