Professional Development Funding Programs

  • Campus College Foundation Grants
    Funding varies from year to year.
  • Program for Tuition Assistance
    When space is available, employees may enroll in a course on a tuition-free basis.(See requirements)
    • SUNY TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM
      This program waives employee tuition expenses for career-related, credit course work as determined by your supervisor, taken at SUNY institutions. Recreation, hobby or personal interest courses, whether or not required for a degree, are not eligible for tuition waiver. Partial tuition, and sometimes, full tuition, is authorized subject to the availability of funds. Individuals are expected to provide their own books and course supplies.
    • COURSE AUDITING
      At no direct cost, employees may audit classes that are held on campus subject to the availability of space and at the discretion of the individual instructor. No grades or transcripts will be provided to those sitting in on classes. Individuals are expected to provide their own books and course supplies.
    • ARTICLE 46 TUITION WAIVER AGREEMENT
      The current contractual agreement provides for tuition assistance on a "space available" basis. When space is available, UUP represented employees may enroll in a course on a tuition free basis at SUNY Canton, Potsdam College or any other unit of the State University. A one-course per term maximum is imposed. Individuals must provide their own books and course supplies, and are responsible for other course fees as required.
    • ASSOCIATED COLLEGES TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM
      Registration for courses at other colleges within the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley is permitted tuition free on a space available basis for full-time employees. The normal course maximum is one-course-per-term, but may be waived for an approved plan of study with the approval of the Academic Vice Presidents of SUNY Canton and the instructing institution. Credits earned in this manner are entered on a transcript by the instructing institution. Individuals must provide their own books and course supplies, and are responsible for other course fees as required.

United University Professions Opportunities

  • Campus Grants
    The State of New York, State University of New York and United University Professions mutually agree upon the following objectives for campus grants:
    • cooperative problem solving;
    • strengthening professional development;
    • encouraging the creative use and understanding of technology;
    • fostering safer working conditions; and
    • expanding affirmative action and diversity programs.

    To achieve these goals, the 1999-2003 State of New York/UUP Agreement includes funding for several State of New York/UUP Statewide Joint Labor-Management Committees.
  • Professional Development (formerly PDQWL)
    Funding is provided for professional development activities; providing training to improve job performance; assisting employees in developing their full professional potential; and preparing for advancement.
  • Technology
    Funding is provided for proposals identifying and developing potential solutions for technology issues affecting employees' terms and conditions of employment and explores issues of mutual concern pertaining to the application of technology to work performed by members of the UUP Bargaining Unit.
  • Safety and Health
    This committee identifies and reviews safety-related issues affecting employees and recommends plans for the correction of such matters by providing money for proposals initiated by campus committees, other groups, or individuals who have identified unit members' needs and developed potential solutions.
  • Affirmative Action/Diversity
    Reviews and develops recommendations on matters of mutual interest in the areas of equal employment and affirmative action concerning minorities, women, persons with disabilities and Vietnam era veterans.
    • Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action/Diversity Leaves
      This program is intended to enhance employment opportunities for minorities, women, persons with disabilities and Vietnam era veterans in the Professional Services Negotiating Unit by assisting them to prepare for permanent or continuing appointments within State University of New York.
    • Grants for Employees with Disabilities
      This program provides funds for employees with disabilities to cover out-of-pocket expenses for professional work-related activities incurred because of the disability. This program is not intended to replace accommodations which the campus must provide under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but rather to provide funding for additional disability-related expenses.
  • Employment Committee
    The Employment Committee studies employee displacement problems arising from economy RIF's, programmatic reductions and curtailments, close-downs, relocations, reallocation of resources, consolidations and technological changes, relating to employees in the UUP Bargaining Unit. It also makes recommendations for the solution of these problems, including but not limited to the use of normal and induced attrition, sharing available State job opportunities, transition to work in the labor market beyond State employment, placement within State employment, and the training or retraining of retrenched or high risk employees for other employment.
    • Retraining Fellowships Program
      All employees in the Professional Services Negotiating Unit whose services have been terminated due to retrenchment or who have been notified of retrenchment, or who perceive themselves at high risk of retrenchment are invited to apply. Individuals in academic fields or professional areas of diminishing student enrollment, or persons whose retraining would accommodate shifting program needs are also invited to apply.
    • Employment Coaching and Placement Program
      All employees in the UUP Bargaining Unit whose services have been terminated due to retrenchment or who have been notified of retrenchment, or who perceive themselves at high risk of retrenchment are invited to apply.

Civil Service Employee Association Opportunities

  • Program for Tuition Assistance
    • SUNY TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM
      This program waives employee tuition expenses for career-related, credit course work as determined by your supervisor, taken at SUNY institutions. Recreation, hobby or personal interest courses, whether or not required for a degree, are not eligible for tuition waiver.     • COURSE AUDITING

    • LEAP PROGRAM
      Courses are announced in the Spring and Fall of each year to Civil Service Employees' Association (CSEA) members on a tuition free basis. Courses are designed to increase job performance and improve opportunities for upward mobility. Participation is limited to one application per semester. For course work during normal work hours, supervisory approval is required.
    • ASSOCIATED COLLEGES TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM
