SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson to Visit SUNY Canton on Election Day, Nov. 6

Published:

SUNY Canton will welcome Kristina M. Johnson, the 13thChancellor of the State University of New York, during an afternoon tour on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The occasion will mark her first visit to SUNY Canton.

At the beginning of her visit, Chancellor Johnson will be the guest of honor at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the college’s new eSports Arena. The event is scheduled for 1:50 p.m. in Nevaldine South Room 133, with media interview opportunities immediately following.

The 1,800 square-foot gaming room went online with the start of the semester as the home for the college’s growing esports program. It features 25 high-end Alienware computers, Sony PS4 Pro and Microsoft Xbox One X consoles dedicated for collegiate competitive gameplay. High-speed networking for the room is provided by Extreme Networks.

The arena is one of a kind in SUNY and in New York State. SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran thought it would be apt to have the Chancellor ceremonially open the space.

Chancellor Johnson is also scheduled to tour the hands-on classrooms and labs in the Canino School of Engineering technology before meeting with SUNY Canton’s faculty, staff, students and senior administration. Student representatives, including Student Government Association President Brayden White, are looking forward to the opportunity to meet with the Chancellor. White, a known diversity advocate, will be among his peers – including representatives from athletics, online and veteran populations – during the dedicated student time with the educational leader.

“The SGA is overjoyed to welcome Chancellor Johnson to SUNY Canton and to our corner of the North Country,” White said.

Prior to her tour of SUNY Canton, the Chancellor is scheduled to visit SUNY Potsdam and will be participating in another public event.
