SUNY Canton's Engineers Week Open House Features Scholarships, Prizes
SUNY Canton welcomes students of all ages and their families to explore the fun side of technology at the fourth annual Engineers Week Open House from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in Nevaldine Hall.
Participants can take part in 15 exciting hands-on activities that offer a unique look into the college’s engineering technology and design programs. Guests can learn about renewable energy; check out ATVs, snowmobiles and motorcycles in the Powersports Lab; experiment with 3-D printing; play password games; and more.
New this year are activities related to the college’s degree in Game Design and Development, which was launched last fall.
“Our new Digital Studio Lab is a must-see at this event,” said Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology Michael J. Newtown. “Not only will we have state-of-the art design technology on display, students can also get a glimpse into the future of gaming by trying our virtual reality equipment.”
The evening’s highlight will be a student competition where teams of two will put their engineering skills to the test to build the fastest maglev sailboat using materials provided by Doyle Sails Lake Champlain.
Contestants from the winning team in the 9th to 12th grade category will each receive a $1,200 SUNY Canton scholarship. The second-place team will each win a $500 scholarship, and the third-place team will be awarded $100 SUNY Canton gift cards.
First-, second- and third-place prizes in the 3rd to 8th grade category include Lego Mindstorms and sail kits, as well as remote control sailboats.
In addition to the Open House, a roundtable discussion presented by Corning Incorporated Foundation will be held at noon Feb. 27, and a career fair for current SUNY Canton students who are looking to connect with employers and graduates is scheduled to follow from 1 to 4 p.m.
All events are being held to commemorate National Engineers Week, which is dedicated to increasing understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers.
The Open House is free and open to the public. To register or learn more about the competition, visit the Engineer's Week webpage or contact SUNY Canton’s Career Services Office at (315) 386-7119.
