SUNY Canton Preps for Fall Semester with a New Academic Calendar

SUNY CantonThe 2018-2019 academic year will have an earlier start at SUNY Canton.

Classes for the fall 2018 semester will start Thursday, Aug. 23 to allow for two extended breaks for students. As a result, opening week classes will follow a Monday-Tuesday schedule: Thursday, Aug. 23 will follow a Monday schedule; and Friday, Aug. 24 will follow a Tuesday schedule. Students will then resume a traditional schedule Monday, Aug. 27.

This change will allow students to have a two-day fall break for Columbus Weekend (Monday, Oct. 8 and Tuesday, Oct. 9) and a week-long break for Thanksgiving.

Other changes for the fall 2018 semester include:

  • Chaney Dining Center will be offline for the fall semester. The college will be serving meals from the newly-renovated Dana Hall. Upgrades to Chaney include the addition of pizza ovens, a new coffee and breakfast location and a completely redesigned dining space for sit-down meals. Chaney is scheduled to reopen during the spring 2019 semester.
  • The Air Conditioning Engineering Technology associate degree program has been renamed and is now Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Engineering Technology. Many of the college’s most successful alumni got their start in the historic career-driven program.
  • The Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems bachelor’s degree has been renamed Sustainable Energy Technology to mirror the latest trends in the field. The program is designed to meet the ever-growing demand for global sustainable energy solutions.
  • New additions include an arena for the college’s eSports programs. The $500,000 competitive gaming space is scheduled to go online at the beginning of the fall semester, with a grand opening celebration to follow.
