SUNY Canton CDL Training Sets Second Program for Dec. 3
With a successful class underway, SUNY Canton prepares a second Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training session slated to begin Dec. 3.
The college’s Career Ready Education and Success Training (CREST) Center will be holding an open house for those interested in joining the second CDL Class A program from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 in Halford Hall. The open house is free and open to the community. The program has also been approved to allow veterans the option to use their GI Bill benefits to cover the tuition.
“Students practice driving every day,” Garno said. “Each section of the class is limited to eight students, allowing those enrolled to gain the proficiency needed to become skilled professional drivers.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is projected to grow 5 percent from 2018 to 2028. The median income for these jobs is more than $43,000 a year. Recent reports have estimated there was a shortage of 60,800 truck drivers last year.
The college has received praise for offering training opportunities in this high-needs field.
In addition to attending the open house event, those interested in joining the CDL-A training program can also contact the SUNY Canton CREST Center by phone, 315-386-7197, or email crest@canton.edu.
