With an emphasis on positivity and mindfulness, SUNY Canton’s new Refresh Room assists students in developing tools to prevent and reduce stress.

The Refresh Room opened at the beginning of the spring 2020 semester in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center Room 134, next to the Wellness Promotions office.

Brayden White and Kyann Jemmott sit in the college’s new Refresh Room.

“This particular space is unique to SUNY Canton,” said Director of Wellness Promotions Farren C. Lobdell. “We’ve provided pillows and floor mats, so students can practice yoga or meditate. It can also be used for an individual private prayer space.”

When first entering the room, students are greeted by a table filled with coloring books and a myriad of colored pencils and markers. There are special cards with affirming messages and stress reduction or relaxation techniques. A massage chair also occupies one corner under a diffused light source to facilitate a comforting visit.

“Our special resources can help students address their tensions and help with their overall well-being and academic success,” Lobdell said.

The Refresh Room is available by appointment and for walk-in use as the schedule permits. Students can request time in the room online (http://bit.ly/refreshroom).

It was created as a part of the college’s larger student wellness programming, which includes co-curricular recognition and new student organizations focused on mindfulness. The new initiative was funded by a Canton College Foundation Campus Enhancement Grant, the Vice President for Student Affairs Office and through individual faculty and staff donations.
