SUNY Canton Announces New Four-Year Data Science and Analytics Program
The newest bachelor’s degree offered through SUNY Canton Online is designed to prepare a diverse generation of leaders in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data.
SUNY Canton is launching a new Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics program. The new program will begin in fall 2025.
“The availability and use of large data sets and how to analyze them for organizational benefit is an increasingly important skill set for a wide range of high-paying jobs,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “The program fits hand-in-hand with our highly successful Cybersecurity program and offers students a deeper dive into the expanding world of artificial intelligence.”
The interdisciplinary program combines data science with data analytics, mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science. Students will hone analytical and hands-on skills to recognize the value that can be derived from data collection to data analysis. Insights derived from data can help businesses grow by identifying trends and adapt by guiding decision-making processes.
SUNY Canton began introducing data science courses to Cybersecurity students to strengthen their knowledge, according to Professor Kambiz Ghazinour. The interest was so great that the faculty members created a minor in the field and then began the process of adding a new baccalaureate-level program.
“We are one of the only colleges within the SUNY system to offer Data Science and Analytics at the baccalaureate level,” Ghazinour said. “More importantly, this degree offers a curriculum that is distinct among its peers and unique when compared to other 4-year programs offered nationally.”
According to Assistant Professor Mehdi Ghayoumi, a prominent feature of the program is a focus on AI, ethical data use, security, and privacy. Ghayoumi will serve as a lead faculty member in the program and has previously authored books on deep learning and generative adversarial networks.
“Students will engage in hands-on projects, developing AI models and applying machine learning algorithms to solve real-world problems across various sectors,” Ghayoumi said. “The coursework emphasizes practical skills in big data analytics, preparing graduates for the exponential growth and opportunities within the field.”
The faculty member has an extensive background in machine learning, machine vision, robotics, human-robot interaction, and privacy. His research focuses on building sophisticated systems designed to meet the challenges of these fields, driving innovation, and fostering an environment conducive to independent learning and research.
By integrating cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, the program aims to produce graduates who are ready to make significant contributions to industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance, among other fields.
The new program will be offered entirely online alongside 22 other programs designed to expand SUNY Canton’s reach beyond its traditional in-person academic programs. It is one of 30 bachelor’s degrees available to students at SUNY Canton.
Those interested in joining the new four-year program are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions by phone at 315-386-7123 or by email at admissions@canton.edu.
