SUNY Canton Students Receive Academic Awards at Frederick W. Saburro Honors Convocation

Nearly 200 students received awards at SUNY Canton’s Honors Convocation Celebration.

The annual event is designed to recognize the students who earned the highest GPA in their major and class year. It is named in honor of a retired, or emeritus, faculty member who taught at the college.

The stage party assembles for the start of Honors Convocation 2024.

Frederick W. Saburro was a lecturer, tutor and faculty liaison for the men’s baseball team, who had more than 30 years of experience teaching students with a diverse range of needs and competencies in mathematics.

“It is fitting that this year’s Honors Convocation is named after Fred Saburro,” said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. “Fred has truly left a lasting mark on his students and this college.”

During the ceremony, Saburro described some of his experiences teaching math, which included a post in Jamaica, where he met his wife, Hyacinth, by happenstance.

“Working at SUNY Canton was the ultimate pleasure,” Saburro said. “Everything seemed to mesh while I was working there, and everyone was just awesome to work with. I really liked the teaching aspect, and I enjoyed collaborating with other faculty members. I especially appreciated my time with the men’s baseball team.”

Students from the Canino School of Engineering Technology, the School of Business and Liberal Arts and the School of Science, Health and Criminal Justice all were recognized at the ceremony.
