SUNY Canton Earns Gold Status on Military Friendly® Small Public Schools List

Published:

For the 15th consecutive year, SUNY Canton has received a prestigious ranking on the annual Military Friendly® school list.

The college earned gold status in the 2026-2027 small public schools category, in addition to being named a 2026-2027 Military Spouse Friendly® school.

The college currently has 176 military-affiliated students, including Army Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Holt, who is a part-time online Legal Studies major and currently stationed in Kentucky. He previously completed his associate degree at Jefferson Community College and will be graduating from SUNY Canton in May.

“The professors at Canton have been very flexible when it comes to balancing my military obligations with assignment deadlines, particularly Instructor Casey J. Dickinson, Esq.,” he said. “He has been very helpful and teaches legal concepts in a way that are easy to understand.”

Holt said his daughter is completing her law degree, and he is considering working alongside her as a paralegal upon retiring from the Army in the next several years.

SUNY Canton has earned multiple awards recently for its commitment to the military community, including being named among the best schools for veterans in Military Times magazine’s “Best for Vets” rankings.

Retired Air Force Staff Sgt. James Trimm of Colton is an Electrical Construction and Maintenance program major who previously earned a SUNY Canton degree in Automotive Technology. He was an electrical systems craftsman in the military and said he wanted to continue learning the trade.

James Trimm works with electrical equipment.

“My number one choice was always SUNY Canton in order to reach my goal,” he said. “The college has a strong foundation, amazing instructors and hands-on building trades programs. I appreciate this school for its no-nonsense, get-to-work atmosphere.”

Rankings consider policies such as priority course registration for military-affiliated students and academic credit for armed service experience. The college also has a dedicated staff member, Director of Military Connected Benefits & Recruitment Patrick S. Massaro, who provides personalized guidance on how to navigate and utilize tuition assistance benefits.

SUNY named the college a lead participant in the SUNY Military Tuition Rate Program, which builds upon an announcement that the college would offer fee scholarships for active-duty, reservist, and National Guard service members.

The college will be featured in G.I. Jobs magazine’s April issue. View the entire 2026-2027 Military Friendly® rankings.
