Computer Information Systems - Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Computer Information Systems AAS degree program, the student will demonstrate competency in the following areas, aligned with SUNY Canton's Institutional Student Learning Outcomes:

  • Communication Skills: Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, about technical concepts, processes, and solutions within the field of Computer Information Systems. This includes presenting information clearly and developing professional documentation relevant to the IT industry.
  • Critical Thinking: Apply critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving skills to analyze information technology needs, identify issues, design or evaluate potential computing solutions, and apply troubleshooting techniques. This involves exploring, evaluating, and analyzing systems and challenges to formulate informed conclusions.
  • Foundational Skills: Demonstrate foundational knowledge and information management skills necessary for working with computer systems, databases, networks, and web development. This includes locating, evaluating, and synthesizing information from various sources, and utilizing quantitative reasoning as required by disciplinary standards, such as in technical and business contexts.
  • Social Responsibility: Understand and articulate the societal impact of information technology, demonstrating awareness of professional, ethical, and social responsibilities in the IT field. This includes recognizing diverse perspectives and engaging in effective teamwork and collaboration to address IT-related issues in a professional manner.
  • Industry, Professional, and Discipline-Specific Knowledge and Skills: Acquire and apply the technical knowledge and hands-on skills required for entry-level careers in the computer industry. This encompasses working with computer systems, databases, networks, and web development, and recognizing the necessity for continuous professional development and lifelong learning to adapt to the ever-changing technological environment.
