SUNY Canton to Offer No-Cost Advanced Manufacturing Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Published:

SUNY Canton’s Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships (CWCIP) will host a no-cost, two-month community-based advanced manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program for people of all ages and career stages who are interested in this field.

Funded by a SUNY pre-apprenticeship grant, the program combines industry-specific training and credentials with career-readiness instruction, including resume writing tips and job interview preparation. Participants will also meet with representatives from area businesses such as Arconic, Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority, and Empire State Mines to learn about apprenticeship and career opportunities.

“A pre-apprenticeship program is a great way to equip yourself with the practical skills and knowledge needed to gain employment in the manufacturing field,” said CWCIP Executive Director Elizabeth A. Brown.

The program consists of 43 hours of instruction, beginning with a virtual information session from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9. Training will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evenings until Nov. 6, with the exception of an all-day session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30.

Curriculum includes an OSHA 10-hour general safety course, which leads to an OSHA-10 DOL card, as well as an 8-hour low voltage-qualified safety training and test, which covers the rules and regulations relating to electrical and arc flash safety. Participants will also complete the required instruction to receive an “Essential Skills in the Workplace” SUNY Canton non-credit microcredential.

“With SUNY’s pre-apprenticeship grant funding, this opportunity is offered at no cost and assists North Country residents with receiving the certifications needed to obtain employment,” said SUNY Apprenticeship Business Developer Angelina Blank.
