SUNY Canton Adds Alumni Events to its Family Weekend Activities, Sept. 13 -15
Fireworks, festivities and fun highlight this year’s pirate-themed homecoming weekend.
SUNY Canton is extending a special invitation to its dedicated alumni during this year’s Family and Friends Weekend, scheduled from Friday, Sept. 13, to Sunday, Sept. 15.
“We’ve moved our Alumni Weekend festivities to align with one of the college’s signature student-led events,” said Vice President for Advancement Tracey Thompson Hastings. “The move gives us more chances for interaction between our current students and our extensive alumni population. It’s sure to be one of the most vibrant and lively weekends on campus.”
The weekend kicks off with an Alumni Career and Mentorship panel discussion at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 (location TBD). Other opportunities for graduates to meet with faculty and students will be held throughout the weekend.
Other Alumni Weekend highlights include:
- The famous Half-Century Club Dinner honoring the class of 1974 will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center.
- A Seaway Valley Cruisers car show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, in the Nevaldine Hall parking lot. Members and guests are invited to show off their rides.
- A beer and wine-tasting event will be held before dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, under the brand-new outdoor dining area at Chaney Dining Center.
- Fireworks will launch at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) Saturday, Sept. 14, on the campus lawn near the water tower.

SUNY Canton’s Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership office will be holding pirate-themed activities all day on Saturday, Sept. 14, with outdoor attractions and carnival-style games beginning at 2 p.m. Performances include a live band and a hypnotist.
“Family Weekend is designed by students and orchestrated by our College Activities Board leaders,” said Executive Director of Student Engagement and Leadership Priscilla L. Collins. “They do a tremendous job coordinating activities for families attending the event. Our alumni are certain to enjoy all the entertainment they’ve lined up.”

The weekend serves as the college’s homecoming event. Current students and graduates are invited to see the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in action during the following games:
- Women’s volleyball will be competing against Alfred State College at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the Roos House Convocation, Athletic, and Recreation Center. The Roos will then face Vermont State University–Johnson at 7 p.m.
- Men’s soccer will be playing the Saints at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at St. Lawrence University.
- Men’s soccer will also face Vermont State University – Castleton at noon on Sunday, Sept. 15, on the college’s Edson A. Martin athletic fields.
