Financial Aid for Part-Time Students

Financial aid is available to part time students. A part time student is one who is enrolled for less than 12 credit hours per semester.

The following types of aid are available to matriculated (degree seeking) students by filing the FAFSA:

Federal Pell Grant: If you are eligible for a Pell grant you can still receive the grant as a part time student. It will simply be prorated based on the number of credits you are enrolled in per semester.

Federal Work Study: If you filed your application prior to the March 1 annual deadline, you are eligible, and funds are available you can be considered.  Funds are limited.

Federal Stafford Loans: You can apply for federal student loans as long as you are enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester.

Federal Parent Loans: Your parent can apply for a parent loan as long as you are enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester.

The following types of aid are available to matriculated (degree seeking) students by completing an application with New York State:

Aid for Part Time Study (APTS): This is a New York State program for part time students. You must apply before the end of the drop/add period each semester to be considered for that semester. You apply by completing the Aid for Part-Time Study and returning it to the Student Service Center before the end of the 4th week of school. Funds do not come in until grades are certified at the end of the semester.

Tuition Assistance Program (TAP): TAP is normally available for full time students only.  However, part time students can be eligible if they are on file with the school as having a disability. Complete the online TAP Application with NYS HESC after filing your FAFSA form.

Part-time TAP Program: Students who were first-time freshman in the 2006-07 academic year or thereafter and meet eligibility requirements are eligible. Complete the online TAP Application with NYS HESC after filing your FAFSA form.

The following types of aid may be available to all students by completing an application directly with the lender:

Private Alternative Loans: Most loans in our Alternative Loan Comparison Guide are available to part time students who are at least half time. See the "Enrollment Required" section of our guide to see which lenders offer options for part-time and non-degree students. See our private alternative loan webpage for details on these type of loans.
