SUNY Canton Shares Semester with German Fulbright Scholar, Ergonomics Expert

An international faculty member shared his professional industry experience with SUNY Canton’s Graphic and Multimedia Design and Engineering Technology programs during the Fall semester. Johannes Brombach, Ph.D., a professor for work science and ergonomics from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany, split his time teaching and conducting research at SUNY Canton and Clarkson University during the fall semester.

SUNY Canton Esports Set to Play Historic All-Women’s Match

SUNY Canton has scheduled the very first all-female collegiate esports match against Stephens College, a women’s college in Columbia, Missouri. The two colleges will face off in Blizzard’s Overwatch at 7 p.m. (Eastern Time), Thursday Dec. 6, with Canton’s team playing from the college’s Esports Arena in Nevaldine Hall.

SUNY Canton Esports Wins ECAC Championships in FIFA and Overwatch

SUNY Canton Announces 3+3 Partnership with University at Buffalo School of Law

SUNY Canton is launching a program that will allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a law degree in just six years. The new agreement with University at Buffalo School of Law is an accelerated program that requires three years of undergraduate study in either Legal Studies or Applied Psychology at SUNY Canton, and an additional three years at the UB School of Law.

Two SUNY Canton Esports Teams Prep for ECAC Championships

SUNY Canton’s FIFA and Overwatch esports teams have advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) finals, with matches scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29. Military Times magazine has once again named SUNY Canton as a top school for veterans, services members and military families in its annual “Best for Vets” issue. The college was ranked among the top 20 career and technical schools in the nation that demonstrate “a record of steadfast service and dedication to those who have served,” according to Military Times Editor George Altman.

The SUNY Canton Admissions Office is extending their office hours for those who may be interested in applying for the spring semester. The event, called “Drop-In Days,” will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., November 13 and 14 in French Hall, Room 123. Walk-in visitors are welcome and no prior registration is needed.

SUNY Canton aims to make it easier to learn about the many health-related resources available in the North Country. The college will be hosting about 30 organizations to participate in its fall Health Fair, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the Richard W. Ford Motor Company Focuses on SUNY Canton’s Automotive Program

Ford Motor Company has added more Focus to SUNY Canton’s Automotive Technology program. Representatives from the prominent American car company, along with staff from Blevins Ford Inc. in Gouverneur, recently presented the college with a late-model Ford Focus. The car will be used exclusively by students to hone their mechanical skills and help them prepare for their chosen careers.

SUNY Canton has earned a spot in the annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges publication. The college was ranked 26thamong its peer institutions in the “Regional Colleges – North” Division for 2019. The ranking was released Monday, Sept. 10 and is based on graduation and retention rates, assessment of academic standing, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate, alumni giving, and other statistics.

The college has partnered with Extreme Networks and Alienware to outfit a competitive gaming space. SUNY Canton has opened the first collegiate esports arena in the State University of New York system. It is one of the largest dedicated gaming installations in the Northeast.

SUNY Canton Preps for Fall Semester with a New Academic Calendar

The 2018-2019 academic year will have an earlier start at SUNY Canton. Classes for the fall 2018 semester will start Thursday, Aug. 23 to allow for two extended breaks for students. As a result, opening week classes will follow a Monday-Tuesday schedule: Thursday, Aug. 23 will follow a Monday schedule; and Friday, Aug. 24 will follow a Tuesday schedule. Students will then resume a traditional schedule Monday, Aug. 27.

The new program is designed to lead students directly into an advanced degree and respond to the growing need for qualified employees with automated manufacturing experience. SUNY Canton Selects New Dean of Business and Liberal Arts

SUNY Canton has named Philip T. Neisser, Ph.D., as its new dean of the School of Business and Liberal Arts. Neisser comes to SUNY Canton from SUNY Potsdam, where he was the coordinator of professional development and chairperson of the Politics and Economics departments. He is also a previous associate dean of SUNY Potsdam’s School of Arts and Sciences.

SUNY Canton Sets Summer Session Enrollment Record for Fifth Consecutive Year

SUNY Canton has set a new enrollment record for its popular online Summer Session five years in a row. Registration has increased every year since 2013 and reached an all-time high of 2,003 enrollments this summer, which surpasses the previous record of 1,966 enrollments set in June 2017. The college’s Winterterm session has also seen dramatic growth during the same time period.

SUNY Canton’s Alumni Association will be bestowing its annual Distinguished Alumni award on two employees whose legacy has made a lasting mark on the advancement of the college. David M. Gerlach, the college’s former vice president for advancement and a 1983 graduate, and Anne Coloton Williams, former assistant to the vice president for advancement and a 1978 graduate, will both be formally recognized at SUNY Canton’s Alumni Weekend Celebration.

SUNY Canton’s Canino School of Engineering Technology hosted more than 200 middle and high schoolers for its annual Women in Engineering Day held Wednesday, May 16. Two SUNY Canton Staff Members Receive Prestigious Chancellor’s Award

SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson selected two members of SUNY Canton’s staff to receive the 2018 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Lashawanda T. Ingram, co-chief diversity officer and director of diversity affairs and new student orientation, was chosen to receive the Excellence in Professional Service Award, and Joette Terrance, a janitor who works in MacArthur Hall, was selected as a recipient of the Excellence in Classified Service Award.

SUNY Canton Students Place Fifth in Regional Bridge Competition

A team of SUNY Canton students designed a steel bridge that could hold approximately 2,500 pounds and could be built in slightly more than 6 minutes. Students from the colleges American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) chapter recently placed fifth in the Upstate Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute in Troy.

SUNY Canton Honors Renowned Nurse and Educator With Naming

A dedication ceremony was held March 1 to celebrate the naming of SUNY Canton’s School of Nursing for the late Margaret D. Sovie, Ph.D., a pioneer in health care. The naming was in recognition of a generous gift from Margaret’s husband, Alfred L. Sovie, in honor of her accomplished career. Alfred, a 1958 SUNY Canton graduate, passed away in 2016 and wished to keep his wife’s legacy alive in the North Country.

SUNY Canton Announces Fall 2017 Honor Roll

SUNY Canton recognizes the students who earned academic honors during the Fall 2017 semester. To receive President’s List honors, full-time students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale. For Dean’s List, full-time students must earn at least a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Part Time Honors recognize students who earned at least a 3.25 GPA in 6 to 11 credits of course work.

Enrollment for SUNY Canton’s online Winterterm session has reached a record high for the fourth consecutive year. Total enrollment for the 2017-18 session is 1,487, which breaks the previous record of 1,474, set last year. Courses began Dec. 20 and continue until Jan. 18.
